Where Denver dogs get off leash
Crowded dog parks close for the same reasons every time: poop left behind, holes from digging, litter, and aggressive dogs. Follow these and you keep the gate open for everyone. City rules below are distilled from Denver's city code and Denver Parks & Rec.
Every dog in a Denver dog park must have a valid Denver city dog license (it's also the law for all dogs citywide). Get one online at denvergov.org — it's cheap and covers the $100+ fine. Metro state parks answer to Colorado Parks & Wildlife instead.
Denver city dog parks are generally open 5:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. unless a posted sign says otherwise. Railyard is the only Denver off-leash area with dedicated lighting, so if you're out at night, that's the one that's practical.
Every Denver park posts a status sign monitored by park staff:
Handlers must dispose of dog waste properly and immediately. Bag dispensers are available at all Denver dog parks (wear a spare set in your own bag anyway — dispensers run out). Dogs that dig holes that trip people are how a park flips to red.
You're only off-leash inside the fenced off-leash area. Everywhere else in a Denver park (and on trails) your dog is on leash — carrying a leash in and clipping up the moment you're out of the dog park is the full rule.
Parks with separated small/large runs exist because size mix-ups cause most incidents. If the park has separate areas (Lowry and Broomfield Commons do), use the one that fits your dog.
Cherry Creek and Chatfield aren't city parks — they're Colorado Parks & Wildlife sites, so you need a state Day Pass or annual Parks Pass on your windshield, and their Dog Off-Leash Areas (DOLA) follow state rules. Westminster Hills is Jefferson County open space — free, but watch posted signs; some zones close seasonally.
